Lord High Chancellor of Olaran
Rassendyll Vannevar Crouchback, Earl of Raven
As the head of the court system in Olaran, Rassendyll Crouchback is one of the most influential figures in the Olar court. While he does not vote in council matters, his legal advice and rulings are often taken into account by both king and council.
When the council met to decide Duke Killian’s fate in YL 1120, the High Chancellor, after hearing evidence presented to the council, called Duke Killian forward to be tried for treason. After debate and the hearing of many witnesses, the High Chancellor found the Killian guilty of treason, but recommended a lenient sentence in light of the Duke’s extenuating circumstances. When the council decided against this suggestion, Crouchback empowered the High Priest of Luminos to revive the ancient Order of Luminos as an alternative, should Killian accept it. This Killian eventually did, and the Order was placed under the joint jurisdiction of the legal arm of Olaran, and the Church of Luminos.
In YL 1123, a courier from the Crouchback estate was intercepted in the forest of the Wicca Wold, and several letters were acquired by the Abelard the Court Alchemist and the Olar and Throian forces in the area. These letters hinted that the High Chancellor was not satisfied with Bryce’s claims to the throne of Olaran, and that he might not be the only council member concerned about the rapid rise of the former Kingsmen warrior to the throne. These letters ended up becoming part of the reason that the Archdeacon of Luminos threatened Bryce’s excommunication if the latter did not answer for his actions before the Church and Council.
In YL 1124, the Lord Chancellor traveled to the Wicca Wold to meet with the Ranger Conclave who were assembleld there with the forces of Olaran. As the lawmaster of the Council of Olaran, he called upon the Ranger Conclave members who were present to meet with him and address his growing concerns about the governance of Olaran, as well as the dangerous alliance with the Hearthlands. Evidence had been provided of Bryce’s illegitimacy, but his refusal to treat with Throi while creating an alliance with The Hearthlands and his alleged treatment of the Rangers were matters far more serious to the High Chancellor than the King’s birth. In his view, the document of rights that Bryce had signed in YL 1122 had been breached.
Supported by the Ranger Conclave and the Church of Luminos, the High Chancellor of Olaran declared that the Kingsmen no longer represented the best interests of the people of Olaran, and the rights of governance should be revoked from King Bryce. Calling a solemn council, the High Chancellor formed a Regency Government headed by the Ranger Conclave, and denounced King Bryce as a false king.
Supporting the High Chancellor and putting forth his own concerns, Commander O’Dale spoke in support of the Council’s decision, citing that Commander Brandis had written to him in agreement. King Bryce denounced the claims against him as false and treasonous.
Now Lord Chancellor Crouchback stands with the Regency government, and has been exiled from the capital of Olaran. Along with the Ranger Commander and the reinstated Duke Killian, Crouchback is part of the triumvirate that leads the Regency Government of the people of Olaran.
